The year has already begun and along with it new expenses and costs are approaching for citizens.
Among these expenses is IPVA, a tax owed by every motor vehicle owner.
What is IPVA
IPVA (Motor Vehicle Ownership Tax) is a tax, the value of which varies depending on the state and the market value of the vehicle.
It is essential to maintain the regularity of your vehicle's documentation, be it a car, motorcycle, truck or other vehicle.

How is IPVA Calculated?
The IPVA value is determined based on the market price of the vehicle, following the Fipe table.
Each Brazilian state establishes its own rate, which means that the tax percentage may vary from one place to another.
How to check the IPVA value?
The procedure for consulting the IPVA 2024 for most States is similar. Check out:
To check the IPVA value of your vehicle, you can access the website of the Department of Finance (Sefaz) or the Detran of your state using the RENAVAM number and your CPF.
- Step 1. Search the website of the Treasury Department or Detran in your state;
- Step 2. Find the section that mentions information about IPVA 2024. This content is usually highlighted on the website's home page
- Step 3. Enter the requested data. In general, these are RENAVAM, your CPF and in some cases the vehicle license plate;
Payment options
The payment method, as well as the values of the rates, discounts and number of installments vary according to the rules of the State in question.
São Paulo and Acre, for example, allow payment to be made via PIX. Rio de Janeiro and other states require the driver to issue their GRD (Debt Settlement Guide).
Payment Calendar
The expiration date varies depending on the end of the vehicle's license plate and the state in which it was registered. Keep an eye on the due date of each installment to avoid penalties and interest.
If you have any outstanding IPVA, the process for consultation and payment is the same. When accessing the system, the amount will be calculated automatically, including interest and fines due.
Exemption from paying IPVA 2024
Paying tax is an annual commitment for most vehicle owners. However, there are some types of drivers and vehicles that are exempt from this tax.
As well as values, payment conditions and discounts, exemption rules vary from state to state, but in general these types of drivers can enjoy this benefit.
- People with disabilities (PWDs) or people with chronic illnesses.
- Taxi drivers and motorcycle taxi drivers.
- Drivers of agricultural machinery, trains and school buses.
In addition to the categories of drivers, the year of manufacture of the vehicle also impacts the applicability of this rule, which also varies depending on your state. Check out:
Exemption after 20 years of manufacture:
- São Paulo, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Alagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, Acre.
Exemption after 15 years of manufacture:
- Minas Gerais (with progressive reduction), Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Amazonas, Piauí, Distrito Federal, Tocantins, Rondônia, Amapá, Sergipe, Paraíba, Mato Grosso, Espírito Santo, Pará.
Exemption after 10 years of manufacture:
- Roraima, Rio Grande do Norte, Acre.
Special exemption in Santa Catarina:
- For vehicles manufactured until 1985.
